Reverse Osmosis Filtration removes substantial amounts of inorganic chemicals (such as Lead, Sulfate, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Manganese, Aluminum, Chloride, Nitrate, Fluoride Boron) most microorganisms, and many organic chemicals. They do not effectively remove all organic compounds. Mechanical filters and activated carbon filters are almost always used with a RO unit. The 1st stage of the RO System is the mechanical filter to remove suspended solids that would otherwise clog the reverse osmosis membrane. The 2nd stage of the RO System is the RO Membrane used to remove the unwanted inorganics, noted above. The water is held in a pressurized water storage container which the 3rd stage before being polished as it passes through the 4th stage, an activated carbon filter which removes organic compounds which pass though the RO Membrane.
